CO&E staff provide research, training, and logistical support to the New York City Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ) in New York City, a citywide coalition of parent- and community-led neighborhood collaboratives. Through a combination of grassroots mobilization, strategic alliance building with key stakeholders, and collaboration with the New York City Department of Education on specific initiatives, CEJ and its member organizations have had significant success in focusing attention and resources on improving the city’s low-performing schools, including a $10 million initiative from the city to support 532 schools in providing additional tutoring services to the most struggling students.

What We Do:

With strategic and technical support from AISR staff, CEJ’s plans for next year include using the decline in 2010 test scores as a platform to advance a citywide education equity campaign; organizing parents in schools in CEJ neighborhoods that are slated for closure or co-location; and strengthening CEJ’s media presence, communications strategies, and online organizing efforts.
