Today, a new coalition focused on education reform in the U.S. joined the conversation, and I’m proud to be a founding member. The Time to Succeed Coalition (TSC) is a diverse coalition of Americans working to ensure that all children in our nation’s high-poverty communities have the time they need to succeed in school and beyond. TSC has a simple mission: to inspire and motivate communities across the country to add more time to a redesigned school day and year, giving teachers the time they need to do their jobs and help disadvantaged students get the education they need to succeed.

Expanded learning time is an approach that has taken hold in many cities nationwide—including Chicago, Boston, Houston, Charlotte, Denver, New York City, and Newark. The success of these efforts has inspired this diverse group of educators, policymakers, and experts to come together as the Time to Succeed Coalition. Together, we have all made a pledge to champion a new calendar in American education, one no longer based on a 19th-century agrarian economy. We are leading a drive to turn successful ad hoc efforts into a sweeping national movement.
Joining me as a signatory to the coalition are a broad and diverse array of colleagues from across the ideological and political spectrum. Founding TSC Signatories include Newark Mayor Cory Booker and former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; the heads of both national teachers’ unions, Randi Weingarten and Dennis Van Roekel; the founders and leaders of leading charter school networks including KIPP co-founders Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin and Uncommon Schools CEO Evan Rudall; educational policy leaders and innovation pioneers including Linda Darling-Hammond, Geoffrey Canada, and Wendy Kopp – and the list goes on.

Please consider joining me as a signatory to the Time to Succeed Coalition. With your partnership and support, we can continue building the movement for expanded learning time community by community. All of our children deserve an education that prepares them for success in college, career and beyond. Our students need time to succeed, and it is time we deliver.
