Position Summary:
The Associate Director provides the conceptual energy, strategic support and supervision to AISR-NYC's research and technical support staff assisting community-led efforts for educational excellence and equity in NYC. That work is primarily focused on supporting the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ) and the Urban Youth Collaborative (UYC) NYC's leading parent and youth organizations working for better public schools in low-income and working-class communities of color.
Job Qualifications:
- Ten years experience preferred, or a combination of education and organizing experience, in low-income and working-class communities of color.

This position requires a highly experienced and effective professional to help lead the research and technical support for parent organizing in New York City, primarily focusing on the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ). CEJ is the leading parent organization in NYC for better public schools in low-income and working-class communities of color, and as such is committed to building a broad movement for educational excellence and equity in NYC. This position participates in conceptualizing, analyzing and supporting the expansion and scaling up of community organizing for school reform in NYC. In collaboration with the Associate Director for New York Organizing, this position develops strategies to maximize the impact of the technical support provided to client groups in New York.
Job Qualifications:
- Five years of paid organizing experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in low-income and working-class communities of color.
- Strong background in education reform research and/or practice.
- Proven commitment to community organizing as a means to improve public schools and achieve social justice.
- Experience in supporting organizing campaigns and supervising staff, preferably as a senior staff person in a non-profit organization.

The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University (AISR) is a leading, national educational policy research and reform-support organization that collaborates with urban districts and communities to improve the conditions and outcomes of schools and traditionally under-served students.
Founded in 1993 and based in Providence, the Institute is seeking a director of District Redesign & Leadership (DRL), one of three practices that comprises the organization. The director provides the intellectual and organizational leadership for the Institute's efforts to advance the design of school districts and other school systems that reflect AISR's "smart" district and "smart education system" frameworks.
The Director provides leadership that:
- Strengthens AISR's ability to develop and share knowledge about the nature and outcomes of efforts to redesign urban school systems so they promote equity and excellence for all students, particularly for those from under-served and high-poverty communities
- Builds the capacity of the DRL team to provide technical assistance, conduct research and develop the tools and resources necessary to support initiatives focused on one or more of AISR's three lines of inquiry: college readiness, extended learning and school transformation
- Develops networks of communities, partner organizations and funders that advance and inform AISR's mission and core principles
- Develops and manages the fiscal resources needed to sustain and expand DRL's current portfolio of research, technical assistance and communication initiatives
- Supports the management and organizational development of the Institute
The successful candidate will possess:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent combination of formal training in a field related to urban education and one or more of the Institute's three lines of inquiry
- Direct experience working in or with urban school systems in the redesign of district policies, practices and supports
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by a record of publications and presentations in professional settings and with the media
- Considerable knowledge of research and policy related to urban school and school system reform, particularly
- Experience and a track record of success in developing and supporting initiatives involving multiple sites and partners
- Evidence of knowledge and strong relations with networks of funders, reform-support organizations, policy makers and advocates engaged in the reform and transformation of urban school systems
- A successful track record of building and leading a team of professionals who work collaboratively and effectively
