Originally called the Annenberg Rural Challenge, the Rural School and Community Trust is now a permanent national nonprofit dedicated to improving student learning concurrently with strengthening community life. This interconnection is reflected within the school through "place-based" learning in which the rural public schools base teaching and learning on their community's culture, history, ecology, and economy while also engaging community members in the work of the school. "Place-based" learning has also been a catalyst to improve rural communities through student efforts to tackle rural economic issues. The Rural School and Community Trust has supported more than 700 schools in 35 states. The Trust has also developed strong advocacy, research, and communication programs to increase the visibility of rural schools and the issues that affect them. These issues include small schools, busing, fiscal equity, authentic assessment, and technology. RESOURCES
