Through the $25 million Annenberg grant and $25 million in grants from William R. Hewlett and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative (BASRC) was established as a regional network of public schools, districts, universities, support organizations and philanthropists working together towards sustained school and student achievement. BASRC provided technical assistance and professional development to schools while also creating a "regional learning community"--a vehicle for the sharing of reform strategies. Noting BASRC's success, Stanford researchers recognized that "a set of fundamental changes in culture and core practices...seem to be making a difference for student learning."
After working intensively with more than 100 schools in the six-county region since 1995, BASRC has embarked on phase two. In February of 2000 the Annenberg Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation announced an additional $40 million in grant funding ($15 from the Annenberg Foundation and $25 million from the Hewlett Foundation), which BASRC will match on a $1 to $1.50 basis, producing at least $100 million for public school reform between 2001 and 2006.
BASRC builds on its past accomplishments with individual schools to now engage districts and schools more intensively by creating "local collaboratives"--schools that work in close partnership with support providers and their district.
