The Transforming Education Through the Arts Challenge (TETAC) project operated through the National Arts Education Consortium (NAEC). With a matching $4.3 million grant by the J. Paul Getty Trust, TETAC strove to enhance the quality and status of arts education and to examine the extent to which arts can complement and support overall school reform. Operating through six regional NAEC consortia, TETAC established thirty-five partner schools in eight states. These schools received professional development, technical assistance, instructional resources, and networking opportunities to deepen teacher and principal knowledge of comprehensive arts education and whole-school reform and to assist them in developing plans and strategies for realizing and sustaining the program's goals. TETAC advocated for the blending of approaches to arts education including: the comprehensive approach to arts education (including aesthetics, criticism, history and production), the integrated approach of arts with other subjects, and the constructivist approach that utilizes inquiry-based teaching and learning practices.
